There have been many champions shown by the Weitoi kennel, most of which I have bred, as well as those that I have purchased from other kennels. I have also shown selectively for other people (clients) as well.
To date I have shown Pekingese, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Min Pin, and Havanese. The following are pekingese that I have bred;

Trish has taken so many outstanding photos of my pekes, I was very pleased to present these two litter sisters to her. The girls are pictured at seven months of age.

The following are show photos of Canadian Champion Weitoi Serenity "Sarah" Many thanks to all the judges who have recognized her quality and have awarded her so highly. To date, Sarah has won 6 Best of Breed (5 over Male Specials), 7 Best Puppy In Group, 2 Group Second, 2 Group Fourth, and 1 Best Puppy In Show. All of this as a puppy!

Care Of The Pekingese

The Pekingese is a very unique canine. As such, they do require some special attention when it comes to their care and maintenance. This is not a breed that requires a lot of exercise, although there are a few that I know of, that go for long extended walks for several hours a day. You would not do this in the extreme heat of summer, as you will find this breed very intolerant of the heat. They do not mind the cold at all, and I find that Pekingese love to go outdoors in the winter. Care also applies here, as you would not put them outdoors unattended for extended periods of time in weather of any extremes.
Feeding ~ as with any canine, they live by the same motto that we do "You are what you eat!" Feeding bargain brand dog foods (kibble or canned) is in my opinion a waste of money. They are grain based food, and the protein on most comes from grains, which is why they will eat more and you will have so much more to clean up in the back yard. You should be feeding a high quality dog food that's naturally preserved (no chemicals). Your dog will eat less and you will pick up less, and what you will notice is the beautiful body condition and the lustre of the coat. Believe it or not, the coat is one way of telling you what condition and health your dog is in. A lack of lustre is usually a sign that either their dog food is lacking key ingredients and nutrients, or they are in poor health.
Coat ~ the Pekingese is a coated breed, and as such, grooming and coat care is part and parcel of this oriental beauty. The pekingese definitely requires constant coat care. Grooming and conditioning of the show dog is an entire subject all on it's own ~ here, we will touch on the subject of caring for the pet pekingese. Ideally a weekly grooming, down to the skin to remove dead hair and tangles or mats is essential. The pekingese also requires regular bathing to keep the dog smelling fresh and keeping the hair clean, which in turn will mat less and be easier to care for. A dirty coat mats more readily and is harder to groom down to the skin. Pet coats can be brushed very carefully with a slicker brush, or in the hands of someone more experienced, a pin brush. If you are inexperienced at grooming, the pin brush is more likely to go over the mats than the slicker brush. You would also be wise to go though the coat, after you have used your slicker brush, with a stainless steel comb with wide spaced teeth. Keeping their feet in good shape is very important, as long nails are very uncomfortable for their feet, so be sure to trim their nails on a regular basis. A well groomed peke is a beautiful sight!
Eyes ~ the eyes of the Pekingese are the windows to the soul! Their dark, lustrous, large eyes can make the heart of even the most discriminating, melt like butter. As beautiful as they are, the eyes of the pekingese do require careful inspection on a regular basis. Make sure to cleanse the debris from the eyes on a regular basis with natural tears (do not use any other kind of eye drops, unless your veterinarian prescribes it for you), as the eyes can so easily be damaged. Gently wipe away any debris with a cotton ball, being careful not to touch the eye itself. The wrinkle is another area of the face that requires attention. Have your vet show you how to clean the eyes and the wrinkle on your first visit with your puppy.
Once you own a Pekingese, you will never own another breed ~ you will be under the spell of the Pekingese !!!

Weitoi (CKC reg'd) pekingese is located in Alberta, Canada. I started showing Pekingese in 1989, and after I gained experience in the show ring and studied the conformation of the pekingese, I started breeding in 1992. I have bred Best in Show, Best in Specialty Show, and Group winners. I have bred Canadian, American, International and Philippine Champions. I have exported to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines and the United States. CKC/Pedigree Top Pekingese Breeder in Canada for 1996. I keep a small select kennel, consisting of quality champion bloodlines. My aim is to produce beautiful typey pekingese that will excel in the show ring and in the hearts of companion owners. I breed "Quality not Quantity"! English, American and Canadian bloodlines.
"Broker" Canadian, Philippine Champion Weitoi Baystreet Broker (pictured), is typical of the type that I strive for. He is a great grandson of English Champion Nowai Harvey Moon. Broker is a multiple Breed and Group First winner in Canada. Before he was exported to the Philippines, he was bred to one female, who in turn produced a litter of three (all females). All three females became Canadian Champions.

So You Want To Be A Breeder?

This is a decision that should not be taken light heartedly. It is a huge responsibility. In my opinion, no female should ever be bred, unless it is with the intention of preserving and improving your purebred registered breed. Check out your local SPCA, and you tell me if we need any more unwanted puppies and adult dogs in this world. I recently looked in the local paper to see how many dogs were being offered for sale. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see over 300 ads from people trying to sell puppies. These were ads, so you can imagine how many puppies are within these 300 ads that people were trying to find homes for. Crossbreeds are being bred at alarming rates. Any individual who breeds dogs for the sole purpose of making money is not a breeder ~ there are people who mass produce puppies and don't care whether they end up in the SPCA, in a pet store window, or out on the street begging for food and a home to go to. On my home page, you will see my statement at the bottom of the page, and it says "We are responsible for what we breed". When a responsible breeder plans a breeding, they put much research into finding the ideal sire for the litter, that will not only complement the bitch, they will also consider the health and strength of the line. Your aim, as a breeder, is to produce strong, healthy puppies that are very good representatives of your breed. The founders of your breed worked very hard at creating the breed, and it is now your responsiblity to do your very best to preserve, maintain and contribute to that breed. Breeding is very hard work, and you bear a great responsibility with each and every litter that you produce. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that these puppies are found wonderful homes, and your responsibility continues, if the home for whatever reason, can no longer keep this dog. You then, as a responsible breeder should take that dog back into your care, and find the best home possible to ensure that dog is happy for the rest of it's life. If you cannot take him/her back into your home, you can play a significant role in the placement of the dog.
A breeder spends many a sleepless night during whelping and after care of the litter. It is a messy job when puppies need cleaning religiously during the day and at night. You must have a keen eye to know whether your puppies are doing well, or if you see a problem arising. Many a heartbreak has occurred rearing puppies and during whelping. There are no guarantees! The next time you call an ad from the paper, and you find the breeder on the end of the phone very straight to the point, and asking you many questions that you don't understand why you are being asked ~ you are likely speaking to a responsible breeder that wants to know who, what, where, when and why! Respect their questions, it is very important to them, it is their right, and they are acting on the puppies best interests!
